Mozilla has announced it: Firefox Quantum will be released on 14 November! A new browser twice as powerful as Google Chrome, packed with new features — including virtual reality!
What is the “Quantum project”?
Mozilla’s engineers are working on the Servo research project: a set of innovative research initiatives geared towards the world of the web. Among them is the development of a new engine for next-generation computers: Firefox Quantum was born.
WebAssembly: a revolutionary new language
Firefox has bet on WebAssembly: a brand-new language capable of executing code on the web with performance similar to native applications. It was designed to be used with JavaScript, thanks to the new WebAssembly JavaScript API. With this new language, web apps will reach almost the same speed as native applications.
From web browsing… to virtual reality?
Quantum will ship a brand-new API: WebVR! It will allow developers and artists to create virtual reality experiences directly in Firefox. A visionary application that will be accessible to every HTC Vive and Oculus Rift owner!
New technical exclusives
The new browser will also be equipped with a new CSS engine developed in Rust, which will display web pages faster. It will also rely on multiprocessor optimisation, meaning Quantum will consume 20% less RAM.
When will Quantum be available?
