On 11 May 2018, the American media outlet Cheddar announced that a team at Facebook was taking a particular interest in blockchain for future projects on the social network.
A blockchain project that is still “secret”

Cheddar suggested that this sudden research into blockchain on
Facebook’s part is in fact a project to create a cryptocurrency. Why? The team in charge of this project is led by David Marcus: vice-president of Messenger, but above all the former CEO of PayPal. Marcus was also elected to the board of directors of Coinbase, the world’s leading cryptocurrency wallet.
This cryptocurrency project could be used across various paid Facebook services, notably Facebook Marketplace, which launched in 2017.
But the cryptocurrency remains a supposition: David Marcus stated that, after four years working on the Messenger platform, he intended to take on a new challenge by building a team that would work out how to make the most of blockchain on Facebook.
Another Facebook representative told Cheddar that, like all the major companies in the new technologies sector, Mark Zuckerberg’s company is carrying out research into blockchain in order to create several applications linked to this technology.
